Chester Technology Business Helps SMEs Strengthen Workplace Accountability

A Chester-based technology business is helping SMEs improve accountability across HR, health and safety, training and workplace compliance.

Employee Passport Limited has developed EPL Hub, a web-based platform designed to bring important employee and compliance information together in one place.

The platform aims to address a common problem within growing businesses: important records and actions being managed across spreadsheets, email chains, shared drives and paper files.

As organisations grow, responsibility can become unclear. Employers may assume managers are monitoring actions, managers may believe employees are responsible, and employees may think administration teams are dealing with the records.

This can lead to missed training renewals, overdue health and safety actions, incomplete employee documentation and uncertainty over who is responsible.

EPL Hub has been designed to give employers, managers and employees clearer visibility of their responsibilities and outstanding actions.

The platform covers areas including HR records, health and safety, training, policies and compliance management.

Mark Whitfield director of Employee Passport Limited, said:

“Accountability is not about blaming people when something goes wrong. It is about making expectations clear from the start.

“Growing SMEs often rely on systems that worked when the business was smaller. As more people join and responsibilities increase, spreadsheets and email chains can become difficult to control.

“People need to know what they are responsible for, when an action is due and where it should be recorded. Leaders also need reliable information so they can follow up properly.”

The development of EPL Hub was originally supported through Innovate UK funding and further developed through collaboration with Wrexham University.

Employee Passport Limited continues to work closely with the university and has provided placements for master’s students supporting areas including research, administration and business development.

Mark added:

“Working with the university has allowed us to combine practical business experience with academic knowledge and fresh thinking.

“It has also created opportunities for students to gain real commercial experience while contributing to the development of the business.

“Technology can improve visibility and record-keeping, but it cannot replace leadership. Employers still need to set standards, communicate clearly and take action when responsibilities are not being met.”

Employee Passport Limited is now based in Chester and works with SMEs seeking a more practical and joined-up approach to HR, health and safety and compliance.
